Why should I get a hearing test?

After you’re 55, the likelihood of suffering from hearing loss is 1 in 4. This likelihood increases to 1 in 2 after your 65th birthday.

With statistics like these, neglecting to get a hearing test is only hurting your chances at a happy and healthy life.

Chronic noise and aging can both be factors to hearing loss, so even if you’re under 55, getting your hearing checked is still important.

Here are some of the benefits you can expect by taking this simple measure:

1. ENJOY LIFE MORE

Studies have shown that hearing loss can lead to social isolation and depression.

People who suffer from hearing loss often find communication difficult. In social settings, this can cause stress and fatigue. Over time, these feelings can lead to withdrawal and isolation if they are not addressed. A simple hearing test can help you enjoy your life and get out more!

2. PREVENT FALL RISKS

Your hearing plays into your awareness of your environment. Because of this, hearing loss can cause you to be less aware of what’s around you and more prone to trips and falls.

Your balance and gait are also impacted by your ability to hear.

As you get older, your risk of serious injury due to a fall increases. Therefore, your best bet to keeping yourself healthy is preventing the fall before it even happens.

3. OVERALL EAR HEALTH

When you come to get your hearing test done, the overall health of your ears will be checked as well not just hearing. Factors like wax buildup, abnormal growths, and infections can increase your risk for hearing loss. If detected early and treated, it is less likely that you will face any permanent hearing loss because of these issues. Your ear health and your hearing are in many ways one in the same, so it’s best practice to get both checked regularly.

4. EARLY DETECTION

If you suffer from unexplained hearing loss, especially if you’re under the age of 55, then it could be connected to a more serious health issue. People with diabetes are twice as likely to suffer from a hearing loss. In addition, the correlation between hearing loss and cardiovascular disease is quite high.

5. DETER DEMENTIA

There are links between hearing loss and both dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease.

If it goes untreated for long enough, hearing loss can lead to the deterioration of your mental state and cognitive abilities. Your brain tissue actually runs the risk of increased shrinkage if you suffer from untreated hearing loss.

There’s almost triple the amount of risk for these issues in people that suffer from even moderate hearing loss.

A HEARING TEST IS QUICK AND EASY

Getting your hearing checked is a process that is painless and usually takes less than an hour.

With all of the potential risks that a hearing test can detect and help prevent, there’s no reason not to get your hearing checked out.

If your results come back and your hearing could use some help, there are plenty of ways to get it back to where it needs to be.
